Read Alouds

I try my best to read a few chapters of a book aloud to the big girls before bed. We are currently reading The Castle Corona. The author's prose is lovely and the vocabulary is rich. I have had to go to my dictionary (Christopher) a number of times in the middle of reading. Does anyone have suggestions for our next book? I am in the mood to travel--to India or Australia maybe? Sea voyage? Jeannette--was it The Penderwicks?

Here is what we read this summer:
Beowulf - Not a very good translation, but fun for little ears.
Tale of Despereaux - Great. I loved that my girls liked the book more than the movie!
American Stories - Entertaining short chapters
Magic Tree House Non-Fiction guides - I was sort of obsessed with these for a while.

"Freddy the Pig" series by Walter R. Brooks. John McDonough is a great narrator if you want to listen to the stories on tape.

We just finished Half Magic and the kids loved it. Another one everyone enjoyed was Chitty Chitty Bang Bang which, if you've seen it, is nothing like the movie.

If I ever read Beowulf again to kids I would read it by the light of a fire. Wouldn't that be fun?!!

We LOVE The Penderwicks... We listened to both books while on two different vacations. I hope another installment is on the way...

And I wanted to thank you for a lovely day! Great company, such an inviting home, delicious piggy, and great weather. Couldn't ask for anything more!
