The Zoo and Shoes

After a blah Saturday morning cleaning and whatnot, we hastily loaded up the kids into the van and drove 50 minutes to the Milwaukee Zoo. We needed to get out of the house, it had been a very long, tiresome week. The drive felt so much longer than usual. Chris and I were both crabby and the kids were irritating us and each other. The drive was only made palatable by listening to On the Banks of Plum Creek on CD, realizing that I lead a cake-walk existence compared to Caroline Ingalls. Anyways, we pulled into the parking lot and got the stroller out and Claire announced: "I forgot my shoes." To which Isabel replied, "Me too. I don't have any sandals."

Seriously. How do my children forget footwear? Grrrr.

Chris and I looked at each other and said a few choice words. We loaded the stroller back into the van and drove an even longer 50 minutes home.

Somehow I doubt shoes will be forgotten again anytime soon.

That's happened here a time or two. I think it's because in the summer it seems like my kids never have shoes on. They play outside all day without any shoes. It drives me nuts because when they come in the house their feet are black. Eww!

Um, Erin I don't live but 2 hours from Walnut Grove! You can come stay with me (!) and visit the site. Then if you like drive on west another 3 hours to see the sights on Silver Lake. Melanie is a great staying place for that leg of the trip. :-) I'm currently reading aloud By the Shores of Sliver Lake, we'll be making the trip (once again so the younger set can now remember it) later this summer/fall.

Jan - I know what you mean. My sil told me though to set a bucket of hot, soapy water outside with rags and a towel. Then they wash their feet before coming in. It works..............most of the time. ;-)

Bluemound Road - gotta be a Target with flip-flops over there!

What a frustrating day, though. Ugh.

They have nice shoes and sandals at home--I didn't feel like buying more.

Besides, it was 3:30ish and the zoo closes at 5:00. By the time we found a Target, bought the footwear and got back to the zoo we would only have a short time to walk around. So, so frustrating.
